I have to be honest with you – I love the Winter. The holidays. The snow. Cashmere sweaters. The coziness of home.
Not everyone is quite so fond of this time of year though, because for many, it is a lot of work and a focus on everyone else, with cooking, cleaning, entertaining, shopping, on and on, ad nauseum.
I know it can be a rough time to think about taking on anything else, let alone starting your new cake business, but I have a very good reason for telling you to get your ass in gear on this right now.
To everything there is a season!
Did you think there were just four seasons? Well, when you are in the wedding business, there are two more you need to know about.
Engagement Season
Most engagements in the US occur between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, with December being the most popular month of all for popping the question. If you think about most of the marrieds you know, they probably got engaged during that time.
↠ If you start working on your new cake company this month, you’ll have plenty of time to plan, to work out all the legal and financial stuff, to design wedding cakes for your portfolio, and to launch a website that will attract potential clients by the time all those newly engaged couples start surfing the web looking for vendors.
Wedding Season
People do get married in every month of the year in the US, however there is a definitely a season when most weddings occur – actually, most of us in the industry think of it as two seasons – the Spring and the Fall. It used to be that most people got married in May and June, but in the past several years, September and October have taken over the top spots. That was definitely the case in my business. Octobers are CRAZY BUSY.
↠ If you get your wedding cake business up and running by the end of engagement season, you can sign up with online wedding sites like The Knot and will be in a position to start doing cakes for the Spring wedding season.
The right time to start is right now!
If you’ve been dreaming about being a cake designer – and if you’re reading this right now, you probably have been – the time is definitely right for you to get started.
Stop dreaming and start doing. You’ll love yourself for it.
